The bridge was an important milestone in the field of biobased building. Locally grown fibres from the hemp and flax plant form the basis for the bridge. The fibres are draped around a core of organic lactic acid foam and cork that are injected together with a bio-resin. After curing, this resulted in a very strong sandwich bridge that stood in Eindhoven from 2017 to 2019.
The bridge is the result of the 4TU Lighthouse research project 'B3: Fully Bio-Based composite pedestrian bridge'. Partners in this project were, besides NPSP; the Center of Expertise Biobased Economy, a partnership between Avans University of Applied Sciences and HZ University of Applied Sciences, TU/e (department Innovative Structural Design), TU Delft and SPARK in Rosmalen. The project is co-funded by Stichting Innovatie Alliantie (SIA).
